A fresh look at a favorite story comes to Taos Saturday, August 4th when Missoula Children’s Theatre and more than 50 local students present “Beauty Lou and the Country Beast”. This country western musical adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast” will be presented at the Taos Community Auditorium for two shows at 3 and 7 PM.
The show is part of the Missoula Children's Theatre's unique international touring project.
Beauty Lou is the oldest daughter of the bronco bustin’ balladeer Buck. At the local county fair, young Beauty Lou is upset by the ungrateful behavior of a miner who has won the blue ribbon for his beautiful roses. She calls him a beast and wishes that he would look like one too. Years later, when in danger of losing the family farm, Buck meets the miner-turned-beast. Beauty Lou agrees to befriend the Beast in order to save her family. Beauty Lou and the Beast both learn to look beyond appearances and first impressions and to see the beauty that dwells inside. The story, set in the American West, also features Beauty Lou’s six sisters, her Imaginary Friend, her dog Fleabite Clyde, farmhands Slim and Dusty, the neighborly Country Folk and the Barnyard Critters.
For the 25th consecutive year the Taos Center for the Arts brings Missoula Children’s Theatre to Taos. Youth from the community audition on Monday and in one week rehearse and perform the musical play. There is no fee charged to the participating children because of the support of the Taos Youth and Family Center and many local businesses that support youth programming at the TCA. The Missoula Children’s Theatre touring productions are complete with costumes, scenery, props and makeup, which give the actors a chance to perform on the stage at our community auditorium. MCT Tour Actor/Directors have conducted rehearsals with these hardworking young singers, actors, and dancers throughout the week that will culminate in two performances accompanied by pianist Martha Grossman.
Tickets $10, $8 for TCA Members, $5 for kids 12 and under. Tickets at the door, and at Magnetic Music, 314F Paseo del Pueblo Norte or call 758-2052 to charge by phone.
