Power Transmission - The Art of Ristow and Sporrong
June 18 - July 31, 2010
TCA: Encore Gallery
Christian Ristow and Christina Sporrong both share a passion for industrial inspired artwork and have produced countless pieces through their appreciation of mechanical symbolism.
“I have been building robotic and kinetic sculpture for almost two decades. Mechanisms are fascinating to me, but they must serve the larger narrative of the work. I firmly believe that the true strength of any artwork lies in its ability to incite strong feelings or thoughts in the viewer. I have recently become interested in artwork that is audience controlled, as this seems to me an even more literal way of encouraging involvement. My most recent large work, "The Hand of Man," exemplifies this goal. It is my strong aspiration to get people engaged, whether through thought or action, with my work!” said Ristow.
Sporrong appreciates the performance aspect of kinetic expression. “I have been working with metal since college, and was always drawn to kinetic and robotic work. I am inspired by large fiery art, performance, and sound, and have tried to merge these elements,” said Sporrong.
Ristow studied architecture at Columbia University and continued his education by working with San Francisco-based Survival Research Laboratories. Ristow’s robots play a leading role in the brave and expanding world of mechanical art.
Sporrong has a BFA from Parson School of Design in NYC and since 1998 has operated a metal fabrication shop in Taos called Spitfire Forge.

The Mojave Desert, a ramshackle motel – stranded in a mythic landscape, May and Eddie inhabit their past while striving between passion and betrayal. Fleeing from their on-again-off-again relationship, May has come to another dead end, pursued by her erstwhile cowboy lover, Eddie. As seductive and irresistible as their ties may be, a desperate secret keeps them from being together. As the specter of the Old Man watches, May and Eddie square off for another round of psychic and physical combat, while May’s new beau, the trusting and credulous Martin, is thrust between them, a foil for their ongoing explosions of deep and abiding love. As Frank Rich wrote in the New York Times, ‘‘Fool for Love is a western for our time. We watch a pair of figurative gunslingers fight to the finish—not with bullets, but with piercing words that give ballast to the weight of a nation’s buried dreams.’’

Reel Injun traces the evolution of cinema’s depiction of Native people from the silent film era to today, only to find the future of Native cinema in the unlikeliest of places – Canada’s North. It’s a loving look at cinema through the eyes of the people who appeared in its very first flickering images and have survived to tell their stories their own way.
Diamond meets with Clint Eastwood (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, A Fistful of Dollars, Unforgiven) at his studios in Burbank, California, where the film legend discusses the evolution of the image of Indians in Westerns and what cowboy-and-Indian myths mean to America. Reel Injun also hears from legendary Native American activists John Trudell, Russell Means and Sacheen Littlefeather.
Celebrities featured in Reel Injun include Robbie Robertson, the half-Jewish, half-Mohawk musician andsoundtrack composer (Raging Bull, Casino, Gangs of New York), Cherokee actor Wes Studi (Last of the Mohicans, Geronimo), filmmakers Jim Jarmusch (Dead Man) and Chris Eyre (Smoke Signals) and acclaimed Native actors Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves, Thunderheart) and Adam Beach (Smoke Signals, Clint Eastwood’s Flags of our Fathers). Diamond also travels North to the remote Nunavut town of Igloolik (population: 1500) to interview Zacharias Kunuk, director of the Caméra d’Or-winning Atanarjuat The Fast Runner.
One of Canada’s foremost Aboriginal filmmakers, Neil Diamond hails from the Cree community of Waskaganish, on the coast of James Bay. His recent credits include The Last Explorer (2009), a featurelength docudrama for APTN retracing the steps of Diamond’s own great uncle, Aboriginal guide George Elson, on an ill-fated voyage into the heart of uncharted Labrador.

Mark Asmus' amusing "Police Blotter" paintings will be the feature of his one-man show Labor Day weekend. Each week, the Taos News publishes reports that come into Dispatch, some of which conjure up very funny visuals. Asmus enlarges and pastes the caption onto the surface and paints around it. Also featured will be his wide range of subject matter depicting day-to-day life in Taos, some serious, some lighthearted but guaranteed to portray the quirky, authentic and historic aspects of Taos. Asmus executes his paintings with a palette knife on birch panel, resulting in a highly textured surface imparting depth, impasto, looseness and hard edges. The Community Against Violence receives 25% of all proceeds.
