David A Leffel:An American Master - Documentary Film & Exhibition
May 18 - 21, 2017
Location: Taos Community Auditorium

Film

Thursday May 18, 7pm - One Night Only

David A Leffel: An American Master is a documentary of an artist’s search to understand the lost knowledge of the old masters. Through an avid study of Rembrandt van Rijn, one of the greatest artists in history, he reveals a destined love affair with painting and former student and soul mate, Sherrie McGraw. Through anecdotal stories from the past, we learn how a serious bone disease almost ended his life and how that led to profound insights into the magic of living a sentient existence.

A talented raconteur, Leffel delights the audience with experiences painting and teaching Abstract Realism, and his own thoughts on Modern Art. We witness the intensity he maintains while painting the portrait and hear interviews with friends and professional colleagues who illuminate the many sides of this modest realist legend. But no matter where your aesthetics lie, David A Leffel: An American Master reveals how the power in simply living moment-to-moment can transform a life.

Exibition

Thursday May 18 to Sunday May 21: Call 758-2052 for hours.

Serendipity brings this exhibtion to the TCA. It will only be on exhibit for 4days due to other long term scheduled exhibitions. This is an extraordinary exhibition and certainly a do not miss.

Leffel is not only recognized by his peers as a painters’ painter, he is also considered by many to be no less than the artistic reincarnation of Rembrandt. He continues to spread his special understanding of how painting works with students worldwide through membership to an online instructional library, The Artists Guild at Bright Light Fine Art.

Leffel’s work resides in the permanent collection of the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, OK; the Museum of the Southwest in Midland, TX; the J.B. Speed Art Museum in Louisville, KY; the Elizabeth T. Greenshields Foundation in Montreal, Canada; and the New York Racing Association in New York, NY, which acquired his famous painting of Belmont Race Track. His work is also found in some of the most important private collections compiled today. In May of 2016 Leffel had a comprehensive retrospective at the Weisman Museum in Malibu, California where work from as young as age 12 will hang along side his most recent masterpieces.

These events are planned for TCA’s various venues: the auditorium, Encore Gallery, and Stables Gallery. Most events, but not all, are sponsored by TCA. Submit your TCA event here.
